Laurien Zwaans

The Netherlands

Laurien Zwaans is an architect whose work explores the intersection of architecture and natural ecosystems. Graduating from the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam in 2022, her thesis, Voor Wad hoort Wad, presents a vision for nature-inclusive building within the Wadden Sea ecosystem. This project proposes ‘Wad-works’—experimental structures designed to enhance biodiversity and foster reciprocal relationships between humans and the landscape. Drawing inspiration from natural builders like mussel beds and seagrass meadows, Zwaans developed biodegradable materials such as cockle shell composites to create structures that integrate with and support the aquatic environment. Her approach emphasizes the use of local, natural materials and the importance of designing with the landscape to promote sustainability and ecological awareness.

In 2022, Zwaans participated in the Slovakia training week of the Erasmus+ project Working in LANDscapes, where she engaged with fellow artists and practitioners to further her exploration of site-specific, landscape-responsive design. Her involvement in the LAND network has provided a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and has informed her ongoing commitment to integrating architecture with ecological processes.
