Subathra Subramaniam

Subathra Subramaniam is a choreographer, dancer, and educator whose work bridges the realms of dance, science, and environmental advocacy. Trained in Bharatanatyam in Malaysia and the UK, she co-founded and led the South Asian dance companies Angika and Sadhana Dance for over two decades. Her choreographic practice is distinguished by interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists and academic institutions, aiming to engage audiences in scientific discourse through movement. Notable works include The Shiver, inspired by Arctic expeditions with Cape Farewell, and Elixir, a dance and sculpture installation exploring cultural relationships with water. Subramaniam’s commitment to integrating arts and science extends to her role as Artistic Director and Joint CEO of Akademi, a UK-based South Asian dance company .

In 2022, Subramaniam participated in the Norway training week of the Erasmus+ project Working in LANDscapes. This experience allowed her to engage with fellow artists and deepen her exploration of site-specific, landscape-responsive practices, further enriching her interdisciplinary approach to art-making.
