the Transitioning LANDscapes conference

Transitioning LANDscapes | 23–25 October 2025 | Žilina – Rajec
An International Conference on Art, Ecology, and Collective Futures

How does the landscape change under the pressure of the climate crisis? And how does our relationship to it evolve? The Transitioning LANDscapes conference, part of the Creative Europe project of the same name, explored the shifting relationship between landscape, ecology, and artistic practice. Over three days in Žilina and Rajec, artists, researchers, philosophers, and activists came together to reflect on how artistic practice can respond to ecological urgency and shape new collective visions of the future.

The programme unfolded over three days. During the first two days, the conference took place at Nová Synagóga in Žilina, Slovakia, combining talks, discussions and networking with site-specific performative expeditions in locations around Žilina, including the water dam and biocorridor. These activities positioned the landscape as an active collaborator in the artistic and research process

“It gave me new ideas on how to make theatre that doesn’t play for theatre.” — Cultural manager, Slovakia

On the third day (Saturday), the conference moved to the town of Rajec, located in a region rich in underground water resources. The day was dedicated to the artistic collective Rara Woulib (FR), who presented the performance Waiting for Vodník – A poetic and musical walk toward rediscovering our changing landscape.

“The on-site experience was the most important creative moment in the project's development.” — Rara Woulib, France
