LAND partners gathered on Terschelling from 13–16 June for a project meeting during Oerol Festival 2022, taking the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of Europe’s most distinctive landscape arts festivals while advancing plans for the next phase of the network’s activities.
Bikes were the main transport as the group moved between meetings and site visits, taking in works such as De Streken by Marc van Vliet, a tidal installation dedicated to Oerol founder Joop Mulder, which reveals and conceals itself with the changing water level. Assembly of Trees by Elmo Vermijs and EXIT by Circumstances / Piet Van Dycke offered different perspectives on how natural and built environments shape performance and installation, while Tussenland by Sofie Doeland played with the idea of thresholds and transitional spaces.

Conversations ranged from practical planning for the upcoming training week in Norway to broader reflections on how site, season, and community engagement influence artistic process. Seeing work in situ allowed partners to connect directly with the kinds of temporal, responsive practices LAND seeks to support, and to consider how the lessons of Oerol might apply across the network’s diverse landscapes.
The meeting also strengthened ties with Oerol’s local partners and offered space for informal exchanges—over shared meals, on ferry crossings, and while navigating the island’s winding paths—helping to align artistic ambitions with the realities of producing in, and with, the landscape.
